BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — Bremerton is getting a yearlong boost in population with Thursday’s arrival of the USS Nimitz and its crew of about 2,800 sailors.

The Navy says the aircraft carrier will undergo maintenance at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

The Nimitz last called Bremerton its homeport from 1987 to 1997. It’s home port has been San Diego since November 2001.

Ship spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Steve Ruh told the Kitsap Sun that about 1,400 of the carrier’s sailors are married and nearly 800 will call the Bremerton area home. About 500 moved in advance of the school year or over the Thanksgiving holiday.
