Delaware beats instate rival Delaware State 61-50

NEWARK, Del. (AP) — Alphonso Dawson scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half and Delaware rallied late to beat Delaware State 61-50 on Saturday.

The Blue Hens (5-2) trailed 45-34 with 13:10 left and went on a 15-3 run to take their first lead of the second half, 49-48, on Jamelle Hagins’ jump shot with 5:38 to play.

Trevor Welcher’s jump shot put the Hornets (4-5) back on top, 50-49, but Delaware responded with 12 unanswered points the rest of the way. Devon Saddler’s jumper started the clinching spurt with 4:38 to go.

The Blue Hens shot 58.8 percent in the second half (10 of 17).

Jawan Carter added 13 points for the Blue Hens, who won their fifth straight. It’s Delaware’s longest winning streak since February-March 2001.

Jay Threatt scored 13 points for Delaware State, which shot 37 percent (20 of 54) for the game, including 1 of 10 from 3-point range.
