SEATTLE (AP) — Washington Congressman Adam Smith has been chosen as the top Democrat on the powerful House Armed Services Committee, which oversees defense spending.

Smith’s Ninth District covers the suburban areas from south of Seattle to north of Olympia, including Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Smith says that as ranking minority member of the committee, he plans to be a strong advocate for military personnel and their families. He also promises to provide the military with the equipment and resources it needs, while making sure the money is spent wisely.

With the Republican takeover of the House, the new committee chairman will be Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon of California. (R-Calif.)
