Lochte, Cielo add to hauls at short-course worlds

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Ryan Lochte added two more victories Sunday at the short-course world championships, and Cesar Cielo completed a sweep of the sprint events.

Lochte won the 200-meter backstroke and 100 individual medley to bring his tally to five golds and one silver with one event remaining, the 400 medley relay later Sunday.

Cielo, of Brazil, won the 100 freestyle in a championship-record 45.74 seconds, adding to his 50 free title Friday. He also won the sprints at last year’s long-course worlds in Rome.

Fabien Gilot of France finished second, 0.23 behind, and Nikita Lobintsev of Russia touched third, 0.61 back, while Olympic champion Alain Bernard of France settled for fourth, 0.63 out.
