COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho (AP) — Police in Coeur d’Alene evacuated several blocks of the northern Idaho city after a man tried to bring an antique grenade to authorities.

Sgt. Brett Walton told The Coeur d’Alene Press that a man who recently took custody of an elderly couple’s estate found a World War II or Korean War-era grenade, and decided to bring it to police on Monday because he didn’t want it on his property.

Walton says the man called a relative while driving through Coeur d’Alene who convinced him to park the truck, get out and call police in case the old explosive detonated.

Police evacuated the post office, a day care and several office buildings while a bomb squad from Fairchild Air Force base removed the grenade. No one was hurt; Walton says the incident appeared to be accidental.
