GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — Josephine County District Attorney Stephen Campbell says a sheriff’s sergeant acted in self-defense when he fatally shot a 62-year-old Grants Pass last month.

An investigation that involved several agencies concluded that Vaughn Sanderson had been drinking alcohol for days before the June 23 shooting and made suicidal statements that day.

The DA says Sgt. John Justema repeatedly ordered Sanderson to drop a loaded shotgun. Sanderson fired a round at deputies before he was killed.

The sergeant is back at work.
