CASHMERE, Wash. (AP) — An 18-year-old man drowned while swimming in the Wenatchee River at Cashmere.

A Chelan County sheriff’s deputy told The Wenatchee World the Wenatchee man was with five friends Tuesday evening when he jumped in a small eddy and apparently suffered from cramps.

Deputy Tim Erwert says the man circled in the eddy two or three times before he was carried down river by the current.

He was unconscious when he was pulled out of the water by a bystander who answered calls for help.

Attempts to revive the swimmer failed and he was declared dead at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.
