MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican federal police have arrested a suspect in the shooting of Paraguay’s star striker Salvador Cabanas.

Federal police say Francisco Barreto was an accomplice in the Jan. 25 shooting at a Mexico City bar.

Cabanas survived the gunshot wound to the head. He would have been Paraguay’s starting striker at the World Cup.

Federal police said Wednesday that Barreto and the suspected gunman, Jose Jorge Balderas, are tied to drug kingpin Edgar Valdez Villarreal, known as “La Barbie.”

However, police say drugs had nothing to do with the shooting. Instead, police say Balderas and Cabanas exchanged angry words about soccer.

Barreto and Balderas followed Cabanas to the bathroom, where Balderas shot him, police say.
