A man was killed in a shooting involving deputies Saturday at the Salmon Creek American Legion on Northeast 20th Avenue, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office said.

At 10:38 a.m. Saturday, Clark County sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported carjacking on the 9200 block of Northeast 15th Avenue in Hazel Dell.

The victim reported that a man and a woman had stolen his van. The victim also said the man was armed with a handgun and that the two people had left the scene in the stolen van.

About 15 minutes later, deputies were dispatched to a suspicious circumstance near the Goodwill store at 14300 N.E. 20th Ave. Witnesses said a man and woman had attempted to carjack another vehicle with a person inside.

Deputies responded to the scene and set up a containment area to search for the suspects. They located the stolen van from the Hazel Dell carjacking behind the American Legion and saw the male suspect enter the American Legion.

Deputies contacted the man inside the American Legion, where a shooting took place, according to a statement from the agency. The man died at the scene. No deputies were injured.

Around 3:25 p.m., deputies located and arrested the female suspect near Northeast 144th Street and 20th Avenue.

Four Clark County sheriff’s deputies are now on critical incident leave, per standard protocol, while the incident is investigated.

The Southwest Washington Independent Investigation Team, led by the Vancouver Police Department, will be investigating the shooting.
