Society Selection brings $1.85M at Keeneland sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Society Selection, a 9-year-old mare in foal to Medaglia d’Oro, brought $1.85 million Monday to top the opening session of Keeneland’s November Breeding Stock Sale.

Coolmore Stud purchased the mare and paid $1.4 million for Golden Ballet, dam of 2010 Belmont winner Drosselmeyer, the second highest price of the day. Both are multiple Grade I stakes winners.

Society Selection, consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency as part of the Irving Cowan Dispersal, had six wins and earnings of $1,984,200 during her racing career.

Golden Ballet was sold in foal to Unbridled’s Song and consigned by Taylor Made as agent for Aaron and Marie Jones.

Keeneland sold 183 horses for $38,970,000, an average of $212,951. Last year’s first session brough $26,291,500 for 126 horses, an average of $208,663.

The sale continues through Nov. 20.
