Butler helps Marquette roll by Prairie View 97-58

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jimmy Butler scored 13 of his game-high 18 points in the first half to lead Marquette to a 97-58 victory over Prairie View on Friday night.

Davante Gardner made all seven shots for 17 points, Darius Johnson-Odom finished with 13, Erik Williams chipped in with 12 and Jae Crowder scored 11 for Marquette, which won its opener by shooting 60 percent (36 of 60).

Prairie View (0-1) was led by Trant Simpson’s 14 points. But the Panthers were outrebounded 51-19.

Butler was 7 for 12 from the field to go with six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.

Marquette held a 53-23 lead at halftime after starting two sophomores and two freshmen.

The Golden Eagles won their 10th straight season opener thanks to a 22-2 run midway through the first half. Prairie View was held scoreless for 6 minutes 47 seconds during the stretch.
