DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Just weeks after rising to No. 1, Caroline Wozniacki will be fighting to keep her title as tennis’ top-ranked women’s player at the WTA Championships.

The 20-year-old Dane won’t face a challenge from injured Serena Williams, whom she replaced as No. 1, or Williams’ sister Venus, who also is hurt. But she will have to fend off Vera Zvonareva of Russia, the world’s second-ranked player, whom she beat in a tough three-set match earlier this month at the China Open.

The eight-player tournament starts Tuesday in Doha with a round-robin group stage. The top two players from each group advance to the semifinals.

Wozniacki and Zvonareva are in different groups and wouldn’t face each other until the knockout rounds.
