NEW YORK (AP) — Four elite swimmers are attempting to break a record in a race around Manhattan.

Three-time Olympian and English Channel record-holder Petar Stoychev of Bulgaria and 2008 Olympian Mark Warkentin of Santa Barbara, Calif., started under the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge in the East River between Manhattan and Queens in mid-afternoon Friday.

They were joined by Tobey-Anne Saracino of Rye, N.Y., and Rondi Davies of Australia in the 28.5-mile race around the island.

All four are attempting to beat the record of 5 hours, 45 minutes, 25 seconds set by Shelley Taylor-Smith in 1995.

The event is organized by NYC Swim.
