Sandy River dam removal proposed

HOOD RIVER — Comments will be accepted until Dec. 23 on the draft environmental assessment for the removal of the Sandy River delta dam.

Plans call for removing a dam built in the 1930s and excavating a pilot channel in the historic main channel of the Sandy River. Once done, the river will flow year-round through the historic main channel and the current main channel.

Rearing and refuge habitat for young salmon and steelhead will be improved.

The draft document is available at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website at www.nwp.usace.army.mil/environment/home.asp.

Mailed comments must be postmarked by Dec. 22 and sent to: District Engineer, U.S. Army Corps of Engineer District Portland, Attn: CENWP-PM-E/Steve Helm, P.O. Box 2946, Portland, 97208-2946.
