Utility increases, train horns before Vancouver City Council tonight

It may be the last meeting of 2011, but the Vancouver City Council isn’t heading into its holiday break with a whimper — two hot-button topics, utility rate increases and train horn quiet zones, will go before them tonight.

Up first is a workshop on train horn quiet zones — those areas most anyone living within earshot of the rail tracks wish for — and what’s being done to silence the blasts citywide.

Later, at the 7 p.m. meeting, the council will hear public testimony on proposed increases in the water, surface water and garbage and recycling rates (a sewer increase for 2012 was approved last year).

The meeting will be in Council Chambers, City Hall, 415 W. Sixth St. The meeting will also be outgoing City Councilor Pat Campbell’s last.
