EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — Washington state troopers say a driver who drove onto a pedestrian walkway struck and killed a man walking across the U.S. Highway 2 trestle near Everett, Wash.

Troopers say 47-year-old Darren Streeter was knocked over the side of the trestle Monday night. He fell 40 feet and was declared dead at the scene.

Streeter and a friend, Theresa Dubs, were on foot after running out of gas. She was bumped by the car’s mirror. Both pedestrians were behind a concrete barrier that separates cars from walkers on the trestle.

Trooper Keith Leary says officers took a blood sample to determine if the 24-year-old driver was intoxicated or on drugs. He was eventually stopped by a cement barrier. He was hospitalized with serious leg injuries.
