Beautify the city on day of service

Published: January 12, 2011, 12:00am

Volunteers are needed to help beautify Vancouver’s primary greenbelt — or clean up city streets — on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

As part of an annual day of service, a number of local nonprofit agencies are joining with Fort Vancouver High School to organize volunteer projects. Restoration teams will plant 5,000 trees on the Burnt Bridge Creek greenway. Community beautification teams also will clean up the city as they walk from Fort Vancouver High School west through the neighborhood to Fourth Plain Boulevard.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. Monday at Fort Vancouver High School, 5700 E. 18th St.

Primary sponsors for the projects are Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, which prepares low-income students for college, Fort Vancouver High School, the Vancouver Watersheds Council, Americans Building Community and the One of a Kind Drumline.

For additional information, call Edward Esparza at 360-313-4188, or Rachel Benton at 360-313-4065. Registration is required. Visit http://www.vancouverwatersheds.org/events to register.
