LAS VEGAS (AP) — More than 2,000 players at the World Series of Poker have started a second card session in Las Vegas, some knowing they’ll need more chips to last as the betting stakes rise.

Players in the field on Monday include Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce, 2010 champion Jonathan Duhamel, 11-time gold bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth and David Einhorn, a hedge fund manager who has agreed to buy a minority stake in the New York Mets.

Hellmuth had not shown up after the first hour of play, despite being well below average in chips with 11,800. Each orbit around the table cost him 10 percent of that stack.

Chips have no monetary value in the no-limit Texas Hold ’em tournament. A player must lose all his or her chips to be eliminated.
