Three out of every four Washington residents who have exhausted their full jobless benefits are still unemployed, according to a survey by the state Employment Security Department.

The department’s survey of more than 5,000 people who used the full allowed jobless benefits found that nearly half said age was the toughest barrier to returning to the workforce. Other findings: more than three quarters of those who had been hired were making less than in their previous jobs — an average of 29 percent less; about one in five who’d gotten jobs were working outside the state; about 13 percent said they’d given up the search for employment.
