LES GETS, France (AP) — French rider Christophe Kern counterattacked on the final climb to win the fifth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine on Friday, while Bradley Wiggins of Britain retained the yellow jersey.

Jason McCartney of the United States broke away at the 59-mile mark to build a lead that reached 12:30. But he was reeled in about 5 miles from the finish.

Oliver Zaugg of Switzerland went on the attack in the final climb, but was overtaken by Kern 2 miles from the end. The French rider produced a strong effort to hold off a late charge from Alexandre Vinokourov.

On Saturday, riders have a 119-mile trek from Les Gets to Le Collet d’Allevard. The race ends Sunday.
