EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say they clocked an Interstate 5 driver at 97 mph Tuesday in the Eugene area and attempted to stop him. But Lt. Gregg Hastings says the driver sped up, passed traffic on the inside shoulder and cut across all southbound lanes to exit onto Beltline Road.

At that point, the driver lost control and hit a concrete barrier.

Troopers arrested 50-year-old Ronald Edwin Stephens of nearby Coburg. After medics checked him out, he was booked into the Lane County Jail for investigation of DUI, felony attempt to elude and reckless driving.
