• Had 96 takedowns, second all-time for a single season at La Center High School.

• Was the top-ranked wrestler in the state, regardless of school size, at 145 pounds entering the state tournament.

More about Chris

• Why wrestling? Chris said he started in fourth grade because he was so aggressive that he fouled out of youth basketball games.

• Why celebratory Slurpees? “It was cheap and not too big, which helped us maintain weight.”

• Favorite movies or TV: Comedies with Adam Sandler or Steve Carrel.

Next year and beyond

• Mayolo has accepted a near-full scholarship to wrestle for Utah Valley State, a Division I program in Orem, Utah. Among his recruiting visits were West Point and Air Force.

“I think wrestling is really a life-changing experience. I think more people should wrestle. It builds confidence. It makes people more athletic.”
