SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — A jockey has been thrown from his horse and killed during a race in the Dominican Republic.

Miguel Sanchez, 21, died on Monday after losing control of his mount, Mighty Elixir, in the final straight of a race at the Quinto Centenario track.

The racetrack had no ambulance on site at the time of the fall.

The jockey suffered blows to the head and received no medical attention track-side before he was taken to hospital in a private vehicle.

The day’s remaining races were suspended following the accident.

The death was the first fatal fall at the venue since it opened in April 1995.
