McKenna supporting liquor privatization initiative

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna says he is voting in favor of the Costco-backed liquor privatization initiative.

McKenna said in a statement Friday that he favors this year’s plan because it generates more revenue for the state. He voted against a similar measure last year that didn’t have the same financial benefits for government.

Democratic candidate Jay Inslee is opposed to Initiative 1183, saying he cannot support an expansion of liquor availability, citing the threat of drunk drivers. McKenna says he examined research from other states and doesn’t see data that proves there would be more DUIs by changing the liquor system.

Ballots were mailed about two weeks ago. Election Day is on Tuesday.
