BEND, Ore. (AP) — A county land-use board cut most of the land eligible for resort development in a Central Oregon boom town that has been hit hard by the Great Recession.
The Deschutes County Commission voted Monday to cut land available for development from 112,000 acres to 22,000 acres, the Bend Bulletin reported (http://bit.ly/to2yRe ).
Opponents have 21 days to appeal to the state Land Use Board of Appeals.
The county has the most destination resorts of any county in the state.
Land-use advocate attorney Paul Dewey says there are thousands of vacant lots in Central Oregon available for resort development, and says the county didn’t need to add more.
County planners have worked on the resort map changes since 2008.
Projected population growth in Bend has dropped off significantly since the recession.
