Smeekens, Kramer lead Dutch sweep

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (AP) — Dutchman Jan Smeekens won the 500 meters and countryman Sven Kramer took the 5,000 on Saturday in a World Cup speedskating event.

Smeekens finished in 35.05 seconds. South Korea’s Mo Tae-bum, the season leader, was second in 35.06, followed by American Tucker Fredricks in 35.19.

Kramer, the season leader in the 5,000, won in 6:13.83. Fellow Dutchman Jorrit Bergsma was second in 6:15.40. American Jonathan Kuck was 17th in 6:28.12.

In the women’s races, Germany’s Jenny Wolf won the 500 in 37.984, and Canada’s Christine Nesbitt took the 1,500 in 1:56.10.
