GONZALES, La. (AP) — Louisiana authorities are trying to determine why a Portland, Ore., woman drove the wrong way on Interstate 10 Tuesday during afternoon traffic, killing herself and another driver.

Gonzales Police Chief Sherman Jackson tells The Advocate (http://bit.ly/vMt2f5 ) Wednesday that 59-year-old Brenda A. Quiett of Portland had visited with family Monday in Baton Rouge and left in good spirits Tuesday, planning to head to New Orleans to catch a flight home.

For reasons that are still unclear, Jackson said, Quiett headed back to Baton Rouge and at some point, she drove her rent car onto the eastbound lanes of I-10 but headed west, crashing head-on into another car near the I-10 overpass at La. Highway 30.

The collision killed Quiett and 69-year-old Peggy P. Fortenberry of Gonzales.
