“There is no season when such pleasant and sunny spots may be lighted on, and produce so pleasant an effect on the feelings as now in October.”
— Nathaniel Hawthorne
Remember that thought when we get lucky enough to have a few breaks in the otherwise wet parade of weather systems heading our way this month. The rain is due and has its purpose. In between, the rustling of falling leaves and bright autumn colors embrace our eyes and pamper our souls.
Samuel Butler once wrote this, “Youth is like spring an over-praised season more remarkable for biting winds than genial breezes. Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers, we more than gain in fruits.” This could certainly apply to our weather as well. Yes, we lost the warmth of summer and those lazy days on the porch or out at play. October has arrived and time to bundle up while outside and seek the warmth and solitude in a cozy place indoors.
This week I noticed the leaves beginning to change colors and pumpkins in the fields waiting to go home with excited children, their faces all aglow. The cornstalks are yellowing and withering in the fields while storms are busy brewing their cauldrons as well.
