The Portland Timbers were eliminated from contention for the Major League Soccer playoffs on Thursday when the New York Red Bulls beat the Philadelphia Union 1-0.

The Timbers will conclude their first season in MLS on Saturday when they visit Real Salt Lake. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. The game will be televised on KPDX 49 (Comcast cable channel 13).

Had New York lost on Thursday, Portland could have made the playoffs with a win on Saturday. But the Red Bulls clinched the 10th and final spot with the win over the Union.
