Salmon fishing for this late in September remains decent. The states sampled more than 7,600 anglers last week with a fish per every three rods, including fish released.
Tuesday, fishing was excellent in the Bonneville area, with 14 boats keeping 61 fall chinook.
Goose Lake in the southern Gifford Pinchot National Forest has been planted with more than 2,800 cutthroat trout averaging almost a pound.
The lake has a U.S. Forest Service campground and a boat ramp.
Chinook retention reopens Saturday in the Columbia between Tongue Point and Warrior Rock and sturgeon retention also resumes between the Wauna power lines and Bonneville Dam with the arrival of October.
For salmon, the daily bag limit for adult fish is now two chinook or hatchery coho, two hatchery steelhead or one of each. Sturgeon retention is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There are 2,626 sturgeon remaining on the quota.
Two other rule changes are effective come Saturday. The North Fork of the Lewis River from Colvin Creek (upstream of the salmon hatchery) to Merwin Dam is closed to all fishing. Drano Lake is closed to all fishing from 6 p.m. Tuesdays through 6 p.m. Wednesdays.
