Junior hockey report 9/30

WINTERHAWKS

Where they stand: At 2-1-0, The Winterhawks are second in the U.S. Division behind 2-0 Tri-City.

Last week: Beat Everett in a shootout, won at Seattle, lost at Tri-City.

Player of the week: Defenseman Derrick Pouliot. Pouliot scored the shootout winner in the season opener against Everett and had four assists in Saturday’s 6-3 win at Seattle.

Noteworthy: Ty Rattie had four goals and two assists in two games last weekend. … Sven Bartschi was returned to Portland from the Calgary Flames and will be in the lineup this weekend. … Rookie Nic Petan had two goals and an assist last weekend. … The Winterhawks’ penalty kill is 8 for 9 and has scored one shorthanded goal. … Portland defenseman Joe Morrow has survived a second round of cuts and is one of 32 players left on the Pittsburgh Penguins’ roster one week from the opening of the NHL regular season. … As expected, Nino Niederreiter (Islanders) and Ryan Johansen (Blue Jackets) also remain with their NHL clubs.

This week: Portland hosts Tri-City on Friday and Seattle on Saturday. Both games start at 7 p.m. at the Rose Garden. Saturday is the popular “Dash for Cash” promotion.
