Kevin Smith on path to start for Lions in Week 1

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith says he’s not focusing on starting.

Smith insists he’s just happy to know he’s going to play this season. A year ago, he was working out in Florida in the hopes of getting another shot to be an NFL player. The Lions gave him a chance to come back in November and he took full advantage.

Smith lined up with the first-string offense again on Friday in training camp while Jahvid Best and Mikel Leshoure missed another practice.

Best hasn’t been cleared for contact after having two concussions last season and might not return for weeks. Leshoure says the hamstring injury that has kept him out is getting better, putting him days away from practicing.
