Towson rallies, pulls away from Vermont 68-64

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Jerrelle Benimon scored a career-best 29 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and Mike Burwell hit two late free throws to help Towson hold off Vermont 68-64 Wednesday night.

Burwell finished with 12 points for Towson (4-4). His two free throws with 11 seconds showing gave the Tigers a 67-64 lead.

Benimon, Towson’s leading scorer on the year, was 11 of 15 from the field and hit 7 of 10 free-throw attempts.

Towson opened an 11-2 lead but watched Vermont cut the deficit to 38-33 at the break and tie it at 40 just 3 minutes into the second half.

Vermont (4-3) took its first lead since scoring the game’s first basket, 45-44, behind a Brendan Kilpatrick jumper but Towson retook the lead, 63-61, on Marcus Damas’ layup.

Damas scored six of Towson’s final nine points.

Luke Apfeld led Vermont with 23 points and Trey Blue had 14.
