Beltran, Southern U top Louisiana-Monroe 68-39

MONROE, La. (AP) — Derick Beltran scored 26 points as Southern University trampled Louisiana-Monroe for a 68-39, nonconference victory Thursday night.

Beltran scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting in the first half, helping the Jaguars (4-5) take a 32-21 lead into intermission. Southern held the Warhawks (1-5) to just 26.9 percent (7 of 26) shooting in the frame, collecting eight steals, including three by Beltran.

The second half wasn’t much better for Louisiana-Monroe, when the Warhawks shot just 22.7 percent (5 of 22).

Malcolm Miller had 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench for Southern.

Louisiana-Monroe’s Jayon James recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Warhawks’ coach Keith Richard was charged with a double technical with 9 minutes remaining and Southern hit all four free throws to take a 51-34 lead. The foul shots sparked a 21-5 Jaguar run.

Louisiana-Monroe was held scoreless over the final 8 minutes.
