Samford defeats Appalachian State 53-50

BOONE, N.C. (AP) — Tyler Hood scored six of his 18 points during the go-ahead run to help Samford defeat Appalachian State 53-50 on Thursday night.

The Bulldogs (7-15, 4-7 Southern Conference) trailed 44-43 with 6:34 remaining before Hood converted on a three-point play. Appalachian State’s Jamaal Trice then missed three 3-pointers and Hood hit one of his own to put the Bulldogs up 49-44 with 2:33 left. Samford would lead the rest of the way, winning for the third time in its last four.

Drew Windler added 11 points and Raijon Kelly had 10 for the Bulldogs. Jeffrey Merritt tallied 10 rebounds for Samford.

The Bulldogs outscored Appalachian State 27-19 in the second half, while not turning it over once during the period.

Appalachian State finished shooting just 4 of 7 from the free-throw line. Nathan Healy scored 14 points for the Mountaineers (9-12, 5-6).
