Irene Soohoo, a reading and history teacher at Pleasant Valley Middle School, was named 2011 Teacher of the Year by the Battle Ground Chamber of Commerce last week.

“She’s a dynamo who has done a tremendous job getting kids to read,” said Principal Ward Holcomb.

As advisor for History Day, Soohoo has taken several groups to nationals after winning at the state level, he said.

Coach of the Year honors went to Merle Crockett of the Southwest Washington Wrestling Club.

Clare Lider, a former Battle Ground city clerk, was named Citizen of the Year.
