St John’s beats No. 17 Rutgers 61-52 on road

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Kim Barnes Arico became the winningest coach for St. John’s when the Red Storm defeated 17th-ranked Rutgers 61-52 on Sunday.

Nadirah McKenith led the Red Storm with 18 points. Da’Shena Stevens scored 16 and Shenneika Smith had 11. Khadijah Rushdan led Rutgers with 17 points.

St. John’s (17-8, 9-3 Big East) won its fourth straight. Rutgers lost its fourth straight (17-7, 6-5).

Despite missing 21 of its first 25 shots, Rutgers trailed only 18-16. But Rutgers’ poor shooting eventually caught up to it, and St. John’s pulled away to lead 32-19 at the half.

Rutgers got as close as four points with 47 seconds to play.
