Tree crushes Grass Valley school sign

Grass Valley — Plenty of good has arisen in place of a huge pine tree that toppled over during heavy weather the evening of Feb. 6 at Grass Valley Elementary School.

For one thing, according to Principal Patricia Erdmann, nobody got killed by the falling giant — even though a community group was using the school building that evening.

Erdmann had high praise for a school district crew, who were on the scene early the next morning. They sliced out many tree rings that will be used to make stepping stones in the student garden. A few more tree rings went to a fifth-grade science class for detailed study.

Erdmann said she didn’t know how much it will cost to rebuild the school’s smashed cinder block sign — “but better the sign than the building or a human being,” she said.
