PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland police say a man armed with knives who reportedly said he wanted officers to kill him has tossed away his weapons and been taken into custody.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says officers responded shortly after 2 p.m. Friday to a report of an armed suicidal man standing in the middle of a northeast Portland street. The man was in custody shortly before 5 p.m.

Traffic was temporarily blocked in the area and a nearby school was locked down.

The Oregonian reports that a relative was on scene helping officers communicate with the man.
