Japan’s Akito Watabe wins Nordic combined event

KLINGENTHAL, Germany (AP) — Japan’s Akito Watabe won a Nordic combined World Cup for the first time this season Saturday.

Watabe finished 28.5 seconds ahead of Olympic champion and World Cup overall leader Jason Lamy Chappuis of France.

Watabe soared 144 meters to win the ski jump and led the 10-kilomter cross-country race from start to finish. Bernhard Gruber of Austria was third, 29.6 seconds behind.

Lamy Chappuis leads the overall standings with 1,031 points. Watabe has 813.
