Longwood holds off Virginia-Wise 85-74

FARMVILLE, Va. (AP) — Tristan Carey came close to a triple-double with 24 points and career highs of 11 rebounds and nine assists as Longwood defeated Virginia-Wise 85-74 Wednesday night.

The Lancers (10-18), who snapped a two-game losing streak, outshot the NAIA Lancers 52.7 percent (29 of 55) to 38.4 percent (28 of 73). Virginia-Wise was 10 of 30 from deep.

Longwood led by 15 in the first half and 41-33 at the break. Virginia-Wise (9-15) trimmed the deficit to five with 2:26 remaining, but couldn’t get closer until a Darius Smith 3-pointer made it 78-74 with 1:07 to go.

Virginia-Wise didn’t score again as the Lancers sank 7 of 10 free throws.

Martiz Washington scored 17 points and Antwan Carter, who fouled out with 11:24 remaining, had 13 for the Lancers. Jan van der Kooij grabbed 12 rebounds.

The Cavaliers’ Smith scored 22 of his 30 points in the second half.
