GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — Drug-sniffing dogs will soon be in some Josephine County schools.
The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports (http://bit.ly/AEnj3y ) that a divided Three Rivers School Board voted Monday to allow dogs from the sheriff’s office to search for illegal drugs.
Proponents say students have a right to learn in a drug-free environment. Superintendent Dan Huber-Kantola says officials cannot pretend students don’t have access to drugs.
But opponents said police officers and dogs have no place in a school. Board member Leslie Meier voted against the proposal, saying dogs won’t find alcohol or prescription drugs. She says the district needs a better response.
