Letter: Release of study questioned

The Columbian
Published: January 16, 2012, 4:00pm

The Jan. 12 news brief “U.S. power plants most to blame for warming” reported that “emissions of heat-trapping gases show that U.S. power plants are responsible for the bulk of the pollution blamed for global warming. Power plants released 72 percent of the greenhouse gases reported to the Environmental Protection Agency for 2010.” That is impressive.

Why has vehicle pollution been at center stage and why the push toward electric vehicles? Could it be, industrial lobbies aside, that the largest and most filthy power plants are remote from high-population areas, while vehicles are not? NIMBY vs. global?

Could the political art of quoting out of context be a factor? The “reported to the Environmental Protection Agency for 2010” qualifier means what? Is vehicle pollution reported to the EPA, or is it an EPA finding?

Most revealing was this study and news release courtesy of the Obama administration, and would it have happened under a more pro-business administration?
