Washington State University athletic director Bill Moos will speak on Wednesday in Vancouver at an event to honor area high school football players.
The Clark County Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet will be held at 7 p.m. in the commons at Hudson’s Bay High School. Tickets cost $30 and will be available at the door.
The event recognizes area high school senior football players for their academic achievement, football accomplishments, and community involvement. Six players will receive scholarship money during the banquet.
This is the 20th year that the local NFF chapter has handed out scholarships. The program has made available $285,000 through its first 19 years.
Each high school in Southwest Washington can nominate one back and one lineman for scholarship consideration. Players must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher to be eligible for nomination.

Evergreen and Fort Vancouver did not submit any nominations.
In addition to announcing scholarship winners, the banquet will honor Mountain View’s Adam Mathieson with the Gary Boggs Award as head coach of the year, and Columbia River’s Darryll Antisdel with the John Hadley Award as the assistant coach of the year.
County players shine at Oregon school
There were a handful of Clark County area athletes who did win a state football championship in the fall.
La Salle, a private school in Milwaukie, Ore., won the Class 4A state title with the help of six players from Clark County:
Jace Benagni; Christian Oester; Aaron Bredl; Danny Bianca, Nick Johnson, and Mike Bianca. Benagni, Oester and Bredl all were votoed to the second team, all Tri-Valley Conference.
Union soccer star enrolls at OSU
Mikhail Doholis won’t play his senior season for the Union boys soccer team.
He’ll instead be getting ready for his first college season at Oregon State.
Doholis, a veteran of the U.S. Soccer Under-17 National Team Residency Program and a US Youth Soccer National Champion, has committed to join the Oregon State men’s soccer program, Beavers head coach Steve Simmons announced Tuesday.
Doholis, who was a first-team all-4A Greater St. Helens League forward for Union as a junior last spring, completed his studies early and graduated from high school earlier this month. He has enrolled in classes at Oregon State for the winter term and will begin training with the team immediately.
“To be certain, we’re thrilled Mikhail is a Beaver and has started this winter term,” Simmons said. “His tenacity and nose for the goal will fit in nicely to an already solid attacking group and his time in residency with the U-17 National Team will serve him well as he transitions into the university routine.”
Doholis, ranked as the No. 83 prospect in the nation and the one of the top three players to come out of the talent-laden Pacific Northwest region according to TopDrawerSoccer.com, spent the spring of 2010 in residency with the U.S. team in Bradenton, Fla. and distinguished himself as one of the top young talents in the country in the process.
Following his semester with the U-17 National Team, Doholis returned home and helped lead his club team, Eastside United FC, to the 2010 US Youth Soccer National Championship. After outscoring their regional opponents, 14-2, en route to the finals in Kansas, Doholis sent home three goals in four games to lead all scorers at the National Championships, including the game winner in the title match.
