The Southwest Clean Air Agency has launched an incentive program to encourage residents to replace old wood stoves with newer, cleaner alternatives.
Agency officials aim to reduce the number of high-polluting heating devices that put fine-particle pollutants in the air. The program is part of a $3 million smoke reduction effort across the state, funded by a voter-approved tax on hazardous substances, according to the clean air agency. Of that $3 million, the Southwest Clean Air Agency received about $230,000.
The local program offers incentives for residents installing new electric, pellet and propane heating devices, replacing older uncertified units.
