Letter: Leave people free to celebrate

The Columbian
Published: July 9, 2012, 5:00pm

During World War II, I manned a 50-caliber machine gun in the turret of a Navy torpedo bomber. It was loud, about eight inches from my left ear, louder than any firecracker. I didn’t mind the noise because it was the sound of American freedom being defended.

I get really nauseated when I hear the bleating about “that horrid noise” of firecrackers on the Fourth of July celebrating what little is left of the freedom we once had.

Freedom is the absence of compulsion.

Outlawing fireworks is an infringement on America’s freedom.
