Letter: Still plenty to celebrate on Fourth

By Virginia Wulf, VANCOUVER

While I agree with letter writer Rhonda Lynne Flora that banning all personal fireworks impacts our celebration of the Fourth, to say this is our saddest, darkest day ever in Vancouver is a bit over the top (“This is our saddest, darkest day,” July 4). I would think our saddest day is any day that someone is shot or killed in our city, any day that tragedy involving loss of life occurs.

To say that your celebration has been ruined is an admission that you are unable to see past the noise and glitter of fireworks to what’s really important — the freedom from tyranny and oppression. So, next year, go heat up the barbecue, decorate your house and family in red, white and blue, load up the patriotic water balloons and have some fun, while listening to the birds chirping their happy freedom from the terror they once experienced on July Fourth.
