Letter: Lessen impact by avoiding sales tax

The Columbian
Published: June 10, 2012, 5:00pm

I had the honor of serving on Mayor Tim Leavitt’s Citizen Advisory Committee this past winter and our group learned there are several options out there that do not involve a vote to raise our sales tax. This seemed so obvious to us.

Why should we and our fellow citizens pay a higher sales tax when options such as taking the savings from bus routes eliminated by the light-rail line in combination with fare increases could be used? Why does the C-Tran board insist on hurting our already fragile economy by proposing to raise our taxes? Please stop and think of what you are doing.

We need the bridge and the jobs it will bring and we need to pay our fair share, but let’s do it in a way that impacts our businesses and community the least.
