BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — The Washington State Patrol says a driver who had been drinking was speeding when his pickup truck ran off a road near Bellingham Thursday night, hitting a utility pole and killing his passenger.

Trooper Keith Leary says 21-year-old Benjamin M. Lolkema of Ferndale was treated at a hospital after the crash and jailed for investigation of vehicular homicide.

Leary told The Bellingham Herald (http://is.gd/AW5LwA ) Lolkema was wearing a seatbelt, but his passenger was not. The 21-year-old from Blaine, Axl Markusen, was ejected from the truck and later died at a Bellingham hospital.
