Padres rally for 12-11 win over Cubs

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Jason Bartlett and Jesus Guzman homered to help the San Diego Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 12-11 on Thursday.

Bartlett hit a two-run shot off Chris Volstad in the second inning and singled in a run in the third.

San Diego catcher Nick Hundley had two hits and two RBIs.

Jeff Baker and Reed Johnson connected for the Cubs. Darwin Barney went 4 for 4, and Geovany Soto had three RBIs.

Padres starter Clayton Richard was tagged for nine runs, eight earned, and 12 hits in 4 1-3 innings.

Volstad surrendered six runs and nine hits in 4 2-3 innings.

Cubs reliever Kerry Wood struck out the only batter he faced.
